The Perfect Business Plan

The Perfect Business Plan

“I’m going to do it right this time,” John muttered.  He opened his briefcase again for the fifth time that day and checked through the contents carefully. Then he smoothed his hair and adjusted his tie.  His funds were running low; he needed his plans to go smoothly.

2 pm: time to go.  He drained the rest of his coffee in one gulp, set the cup down carefully and left a dollar on the table. He grabbed his briefcase and walked down to the hotel to meet his prospector.

Emerging from the revolving door, John nodded briefly at the doorman.  He glanced around the lobby; it was quiet. There she was, sitting on one of plush armchairs set in the middle of the lobby.  They smiled, shook hands and moved to the elevator.

An hour later, John came back down to the lobby. He had a satisfied look and a half smile on his face. He took a Starbucks bag from his briefcase and dropped it into the trash can near the cluster of arm chairs.  In the bag were a coil of rope and a pair of stained men’s white gloves.

The plan had been executed perfectly.

I like this.  It stirs up so many questions, and leaves the reading wanting to know more.

It's also slightly timeless, it's not until the mention of Starbucks that it puts it into a sense of time, before that point it could have been as much in the 20s as it could be the  70s or 80s.

Where's the story?  It's right there.
