I Lost My Appetite for You

A poem about the loss of lust

when we met
it was like dancing with demons:
a tasty seduction of decadence,
a gorgeous morsel of lust.

my belly was full with you,
gurgling and hiccupping
in delight and desire

and yet

the initial explosion of flavors,
bewildering as they were,
lasted only briefly.

then, there was the thereafter:

masks pulled from faces,
bodies disrobed,
naked and oddly contorted in natural light
the subtle
became obvious,
like the dirty haze on your halo.

the reality
of who we were
became transparent.

there was no disguising
the wickedness in which we stewed,
the lovelessness in which we baked,
the gross indulgence in which we braised.
i was obese in my consumption of you.

that night,
the night that light
exposed our nasty forms and crevices,

i lost my appetite for you.
